Daily Production Reporting:
A Case Study in Custom Exploration and Production Software
Entrance Software frequently encounters common patterns in the software that we are asked to write. Every case is unique, and we have developed an in-depth understanding of the unique complexities of the oil and gas business that allows us to tailor data capture and reporting solutions to each customer.
This client is an oil and gas exploration and acquisition company focused in the shallow water Gulf of Mexico and Gulf Coast.
Part I:
The Problem
This client uses the highly complex OGSYS and ProCount software packages to monitor and track production revenue from off-shore properties. While these packages both support integration with third-party software, neither package has the ability to report on third-party data. In addition, the ProCount package lacks certain vital reports that the company needs to do it’s business.
The Custom Software Solution
Entrance Software used web-based, .Net technology to extract data from OGSYS, ProCount and other data sources used by our client. Native SQL adapters were used to query each database independently, and a “mapping table” was used to match properties, dates, and production volumes between the two primary databases (OGSYS and ProCount). The final result, a report comparing theoretical production to monthly sales, can be generated on request.
Part II:
The Problem
The most critical of these reports is a comparison of daily “theoretical” production to monthly sales volumes. Creating this report is particularly painful for any E & P company because it requires an analyst to spend hours each day manually keying oil and gas production volumes for every property into their production tracking system. For most E & P companies the process looks something like this:
- Receive Excel (or PDF) reports from partners on a daily, weekly, or monthly basis
- Print every report and compare to a “template” indicating which fields should be entered into ProCount
- Re-key each value into the Analyst interface
- File the original Excel/PDF report and the paper copy for later reference
The Custom Software Solution
Entrance Software reduced the amount of time required to enter partner reports from 4 hours per day to less than 30 minutes. After downloading each report, the analyst can upload the Excel file to an “importer” that reads, validates, and copies the daily production volumes into ProCount. Now, the analyst confirms receipt of each report, uploads it to the importer, and moves on to more important tasks.
