Microsoft SQL Server
Microsoft SQL Server is a relational database management system. It is used for online transaction processing (OLTP), data warehousing and e-commerce sites. SQL Server also has modules designed for business intelligence and reporting services and data integration. The SQL Server 2005 interface has "studios" that aid in both development and management tasks. The following are the main components of SQL Server 2005:
- Database Engine – This component stores, processes and secures data. It also provides access to the database via the application used by the client. Programmers utilize the database engine to create database objects such as tables, indexes, views and stored procedures. These objects can then be managed in the SQL Server Management Studio.
- Analysis Services – This component is responsible for Online Analytical Processing (OLAP) and data mining. A thorough top-down analysis of data and patterns discovered with the data mining tools allow businesses to make informed decisions with what may otherwise be an overwhelming amount of data.
- Integration Services – This component is critical to building data integration solutions. This is done through updating data warehouses, copying and downloading files and managing database objects. - Reporting Services – This component includes a variety of tools that allow you to run multiple types of reports. Reports can be scheduled to run at set intervals or on-command. Reporting services with SQL Server secures data reports in centralized location and permits access only to authorized users. This component also enables the user to customize how reports are processed and delivered.
